Oak Wilt Awareness and Prevention

How to Identify and Manage This Tree Disease On Your Property

According to a recent article by Native Land Design, Texas Oak Wilt is the most devastating tree disease affecting live oaks and red oaks in Central Texas. It is killing our valuable oak trees at epidemic proportions as thousands of oak trees across Texas fall victim to this unrelenting fungus.

Per the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service, oak wilt has been found in 21 States, with considerable damage occurring in the Midwest and Texas. Recently, cases have been identified within Crystal Falls.

Deed restrictions require that owners treat any trees on their property that have become infected.

Understanding Oak Wilt is key to preventing the spread of this devastating tree disease. While there is no cure for oak wilt, there are a number of things you can do to reduce or even prevent new infections. For example, oaks should not be pruned between early February and late June when beetles are most active.
